The disk of the setting sun sports the sun illusion effect making it appear larger than its true apparent diameter of 30 min's of arc as it sank into the hazy sky over the Sperrin Mountains near Maghera, N. Ireland on Jan 22nd 2011. The distant contrails crossing the disk gave the illusion of viewing a gas giant planet like Jupiter. If you look carefully to the right hand side of the disk below the upper most contrail you can see a large sunspot which at the time was threatening to unleash an M-class solar flare. Captured with a Canon 100-400mm IS USM lens at 400mm. * All images are available for sale in the form of photo prints, canvas or digital files for licensing, if you are interested in a purchase simply drop me an email.
